Arturo Gatti Jr., 17, Found Dead In Mexico; Cause Of Death Unknown
Tragedy has struck Arturo Gatti’s heartbroken family yet again.

The Ring has confirmed that Arturo Gatti Jr., the 17-year-old son of the late legend, was found dead Monday afternoon in Mexico. Gatti Jr., an aspiring professional boxer, resided in Mexico with his mother, Amanda Rodrigues, Arturo Gatti’s widow.

Gatti Jr.’s cause of death could not be confirmed at the time this story was posted.

The younger Gatti was an amateur boxer who wanted to fight in the Olympics before he turned professional. He was 1-year-old when his father was found dead amid mysterious circumstances in July 2009 in Porto de Galinhas, Brazil.

Gatti Jr. often spoke glowingly about honoring his father’s memory by becoming a boxer.

He impressed people at an early age through training videos posted on YouTube and other social media platforms and continued to advance in the gym. Gatti Jr.’s Instagram account features countless photos of him training, including Mike Tyson instructing him, as well as photos of his famous father.

Brazilian authorities ultimately ruled Arturo Gatti, 37, committed suicide 16 years ago. Many family members and friends have long disputed his cause of death.

An exhaustive examination by Dr. Michael Baden – a respected forensic pathologist hired by Pat Lynch, Gatti’s longtime manager and close friend – revealed Gatti didn’t hang himself.

Rodrigues was arrested in the immediate aftermath of Gatti’s death and named a primary suspect in what initially was a murder investigation. She was released 18 days later and never charged with a crime.

A Quebec Superior Court judge awarded Rodrigues what was left of an estate once valued at approximately $6 million in December 2011.

Gatti’s mother, Ida, contested a will that was changed three weeks before her son died, but a judge ruled in Rodrigues’ favor. A will Gatti signed in 2007 would’ve left Ida Gatti in complete control of his estate.

Gatti, Rodrigues and Gatti Jr. resided in Montreal at the time of his death. Gatti was born in Italy, but the two-division world champion was raised in Montreal and as a teenager moved to New Jersey, where he lived throughout his celebrated career.

He married Rodrigues in August 2007 in Las Vegas. Arturo Jr. was born the following year.

Gatti is also survived by a daughter, Sofia, from a previous relationship.

Gatti’s older brother, Joe, was a junior middleweight contender before Arturo Gatti became one of the most entertaining fighters of his era. Gatti is remembered fondly for his thrilling trilogy with Micky Ward, who later became his close friend and trainer, and many more fantastic action fights broadcast by HBO.

The junior lightweight and junior welterweight champ went 40-9, including 31 knockouts, during his 16-year professional career. Gatti was inducted in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2013, his first year of eligibility.
